History Behind The Name

The Blue Jackets’ name pays homage to Ohio’s contributions to American history and the great pride and patriotism exhibited by its citizens, especially during the Civil War as both the state of Ohio and the city of Columbus were significantly influential on the Union Army. Ohio contributed more of its population to the Union Army than any other state, while many of the uniforms worn by the Union soldiers were manufactured in Columbus.

The Colors

The Blue Jackets’ colors help define the team and tell its story. The colors consist of Union Blue, Goal Red and Capital Silver. Union Blue represents the color worn by the Union Army, while Goal Red references the most exciting moment in hockey and Capital Silver is reflected in the star on the logo, which signifies Columbus as the capital of Ohio.

The Logos

Primary Logo

The club’s primary logo is inspired by the state flag of Ohio, with its unique pennant shape, red, white & blue colors and white stars, in the shape of the letter C. That image overlays the familiar Blue Jackets’ star. The official state flag of Ohio, called the Ohio burgee, is based upon the pennant used by the Ohio cavalry from 1862-65. Ohio’s is the only American state flag that is not shaped in a rectangle.

Secondary Logo

The Blue Jackets new secondary logo was introduced in the summer of 2015. The mark is similar to the club’s current third jersey logo as the team name “Columbus Blue Jackets” encircles the cannon in a ribbon inspired by Civil War medals while a single star centered at the bottom of the crest signifies Columbus as Ohio’s capital. The difference is the logo is comprised of the club’s primary colors – Union Blue, Goal Red, Capital Silver and White. It replaces the secondary logo that entailed the blue Union Army cap that features two crossed hockey sticks lying on a red with white trim background surrounded by a blue with silver trim oval containing two stars anchoring the words “Columbus Blue Jackets” that was unveiled in 2003.

Third Jersey Logo

The Blue Jackets introduced their third jersey logo in 2010. The mark reinforces the connection between the team name and its Civil War heritage, depicting the hockey club’s signature 1857 Napoleon cannon that fires each time the Blue Jackets score at Nationwide Arena. The team name “Columbus Blue Jackets” encircles the cannon in a ribbon inspired by Civil War medals, while a single star centered at the bottom of the crest signifies Columbus as Ohio’s capital.
