The Blue Jackets sign the first player in the history of the organization, Niagara University goaltender Greg Gardner.

Nielsen played 52 games over the first two seasons in club history

The Blue Jackets negotiate the first trade in the history of the organization, sending their fourth and ninth round picks in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft to the New York Islanders for forward Chris Nielsen.

Columbus makes its first significant splash in the free agent market by signing defenseman Lyle Odelein and goaltender Ron Tugnutt on back-to-back days.

The Blue Jackets name former Calgary Flames and Team Canada bench boss Dave King as the first head coach in team history.

The Blue Jackets name defenseman Lyle Odelein as the team’s first-ever captain. Forwards Geoff Sanerson and Tyler Wright were selected as alternate captains.

Welcome to the NHL, Columbus! The Blue Jackets jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead, but suffer a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks before a sellout crowd of 18,136 in their inaugural NHL game. Bruce Gardiner scores the first goal in team history at 7:34 of the first period.

Kevyn Adams scores two goals, including the game-winner at 4:13 of the second period, as the Blue Jackets post the first win in franchise history with a 3-2 victory over the Calgary Flames at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Marc Denis makes 32 saves to lead the Blue Jackets to a 3-1 win over the Washington Capitals for the first victory in club history at Nationwide Arena.

Ron Tugnutt makes 27 saves to record the first shutout in team history in a 2-0 win over the Canadiens at the Molson Centre in Montreal.

Geoff Sanderson collects the first hat trick in club history as he scores all three goals in a 3-1 win over Nashville at Nationwide Arena.

David Vyborny becomes the first rookie in NHL history to score a pair of penalty shot goals in one season when he beats Nashville’s Tomas Vokoun. He also scored on Chicago’s Robbie Tallas on Oct. 15.

Espen Knutsen sets a club record for assists and points in a game with five in a 6-4 win over the Calgary Flames at Nationwide Arena.

Ron Tugnutt makes 29 saves to beat the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 in overtime and picks up his 22nd win of the season to set a new NHL record for wins by a goaltender on an expansion team.

Espen Knutsen becomes the first player to represent the Blue Jackets at the NHL All-Star Game. He is also the first native of Norway to play in the game

Feb. 8, 2002

David Vyborny’s third period goal lifts the Blue Jackets past league-leading Detroit and gives Columbus its first-ever win at Joe Louis Arena. The loss was one of just seven suffered by the eventual Stanley Cup champions at home.

Mar. 16, 2002

Brittanie Cecil, 13, is struck by a deflected puck while attending the Blue Jackets game against the Calgary Flames at Nationwide Arena. She dies two days later, becoming the first fan fatality in the NHL’s 85-year history. The Blue Jackets honor her memory by wearing a heart shaped decal with her initials “BNC” on their helmets for the remainder of the season.

June 22 – 23, 2002

The Blue Jackets, who are expected to select third overall at the 2002 Draft at Air Canada Centre in Toronto, trade up to get the first overall pick and use it to select London Knights left wing Rick Nash. It’s an active draft weekend that finds the Blue Jackets making five trades and selecting 13 players.

The Blue Jackets’ arrival in Columbus is voted the top moment in Columbus sports history by fans, it is announced at “Columbus Celebrates Sports,” a fund-raising event hosted by the Greater Columbus Convention and Visitor’s Bureau to kick off the newly formed Columbus Sports Commission.

Columbus names Ray Whitney as the second captain in club history.

The Blue Jackets win their season and home-openers for the first time in club history, beating the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 at Nationwide Arena. Rick Nash becomes the eighth first-overall NHL draft pick, and first since Eric Lindros in 1991, to score a goal in his first NHL game.

Tyler Wright scores three goals in a 4-3 OT win vs. Toronto to become the first player in Blue Jackets history to record two hat tricks in a season. He also scored three times in a 5-1 win vs. Los Angeles on Oct. 27, 2002.

Geoff Sanderson becomes the first player in team history to score four goals in a game in a 6-4 win at Calgary. Sanderson adds an assist and Andrew Cassels tallies 1-4-5 as each ties the club record for points in a game.

Apr. 4, 2003

During the third period vs. Detroit, Marc Denis breaks the NHL single season record for minutes played by a goaltender (4,433 by New Jersey’s Martin Brodeur in 1995-96). He finishes the season with a new standard of 4,511.

June 21 – 22, 2003

Columbus selects 10 players, including right wing Nikolai Zherdev with the fourth overall pick, at the 2003 NHL Draft at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville, Tenn. Parma native Dan Fritsche becomes the first Ohio-born player drafted by the Blue Jackets when the club selects him in the second round, 46th overall.

Defenseman Luke Richardson is named the Blue Jackets’ third captain in franchise history.

Oct. 13, 2003

The Blue Jackets’ “Third Jersey” is unveiled during a ceremony outside of Nationwide Arena. Later that night, the Blue Jackets defeat the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in their first game wearing the “Third Jersey.”

Gerard Gallant takes over as interim head coach after Doug MacLean relinquishes the role of head coach. A day later, Gallant wins his debut with a 2-0 victory at Tampa Bay. The club would remove the interim title following the season on June 25

Feb. 7, 2004

Nineteen-year-old Rick Nash plays in the NHL All-Star Game for the Western Conference at the Excel Energy Center in St. Paul, MN. Nash is the first teenager to play in the game in 12 years and youngest to play in the game since 1986.

Apr. 3, 2004

Rick Nash nets his 41st goal of the season in the Blue Jackets’ final game of the season. Nash finishes the season tied with Atlanta’s Ilya Kovalchuk and Calgary’s Jarome Iginla for the NHL lead in goals, netting him a share of the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy. He becomes the youngest player in NHL history in lead the League in goals. The Jackets defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 at Joe Louis Arena.

The Blue Jackets select 11 players, including Lewiston’s Alexandre Picard with the eighth overall pick, at the 2004 Draft at RBC Center in Raleigh, N.C.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announces that a new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and its players has been reached, and NHL hockey will return in October 2005.

July 30, 2005

The Blue Jackets select eight players, including Vancouver Giants center Gilbert Brule with the sixth overall pick, at the 2005 Draft held at the Westin Hotel in Ottawa.

Oct. 28, 2005

The Blue Jackets beat Minnesota 2-1 at Nationwide Arena in the first game decided by a shootout in team history. Trevor Letowski beats Wild goaltender Dwayne Roloson in the eighth round to give the Jackets the win.

Nov. 15, 2005

The Blue Jackets acquire six-time All-Star – and future Hockey Hall of Famer – Sergei Fedorov and a fifth-round pick in the 2006 NHL Draft from Anaheim in exchange for Tyler Wright and Francois Beauchemin.

Rick Nash scores his third goal, including the game-tying goal at 19:27 of the third period, to record his first career hat trick in a 6-5 shootout loss at Detroit.

Ken Hitchcock is named the fourth head coach in Blue Jackets history.

First-year NHL goaltender Fredrik Norrena plays 155:28 without allowing a goal to set a franchise record for the longest shutout streak. The stretch includes back-to-back shutouts at Edmonton (4-0, 21 saves) and Colorado (3-0, 42 saves).

For just the second time in team history, the Blue Jackets rally from a three-goal third period deficit to beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-3 at Honda Center. Columbus scores three times in a span of 1:54 capped by Manny Malhotra’s game-winner with 1:20 left in the period.

Feb. 24, 2007

Columbus scores two shorthanded goals in a game for the first time in team history to overcome a 2-0 deficit to beat the New York Rangers 3-2 at Madison Square Garden. Jason Chimera’s goal at 11:02 of the second period tied the game at 2-2 and Rick Nash’s tally just 4:52 later is the game-winner.

Scott Howson is named the second general manager in Blue Jackets history.

The Blue Jackets select seven players, including Halifax Mooseheads right wing Jakub Voracek with the seventh overall pick, at the 2007 Draft held at Nationwide Arena.

Pascal Leclaire makes 32 saves in a 4-0 win at Minnesota to record his team-record sixth shutout in just his 15th start of the season. He would end the season with nine, ranking second in the NHL.

Rick Nash scores one of the most dynamic goals in NHL history as he beats a pair of Phoenix defensemen and goaltender Mikael Tellqvist with 21.5 seconds left in regulation to lift Columbus to a 4-3 win at Jobing.com Arena.

Jan. 27, 2008

Rick Nash sets an NHL All-Star Game record by scoring a goal just :12 into the game en route to collecting the 15th hat trick in All-Star Game history at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The game marks Nash’s third-straight All-Star Game selection after combining for 5-2-7 in the previous two games.

Jason Chimera misses the season finale due to a groin injury, which ends his franchise record for consecutive games played at 243. The streak began on Oct. 9, 2005 at Chicago in his first game with the club.

Blue Jackets majority owner and chairman John H. McConnell passes away at the age of 84. His son, John P. McConnell, assumes the duties of majority owner, chairman and governor for the hockey club.

The Blue Jackets select nine players, including CSKA forward Nikita Filatov with the sixth overall pick, at the 2008 Draft held at Scotiabank Place in Ottawa.

Oct. 17, 2008

Rookies Nikita Filatov and Jakub Voracek set a franchise record for fastest two goals scored vs. Nashville. The duo scores just :08 apart as Filatov lights the lamp at 14:18 of the first period and Voracek follows suit at the 14:26 mark.

Dec. 23, 2008 – Jan. 2, 2009

Rookie Steve Mason sets the franchise record for longest shutout streak at 199:19 and becomes the first Blue Jackets goaltender to record three-straight shutouts – Dec. 27 vs. Philadelphia, Dec. 29 at Los Angeles and Dec. 31 at Anaheim.

Ken Hitchcock becomes the 13th coach in NHL history to record 500 wins when the Blue Jackets beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 in a shootout at Air Canada Centre.

Rick Nash becomes the first player since Montreal’s Maurice “Rocket” Richard in 1947-48 to record an unassisted hat trick as the Jackets set a franchise record for goals in a game in an 8-2 win at Detroit.

A regular season record crowd of 19,167 at Nationwide Arena is on hand to see the Blue Jackets defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in a shootout.

Cam Atkinson collects the 25th hat trick in franchise history with three goals in a 5-2 win over Chicago at United Center, marking the first time in club history that the Jackets have scored a hat trick in two straight games after Scott Hartnell registered a hat trick on Mar. 24 vs. Anaheim.

Apr. 4, 2015

Columbus posts its ninth-straight win, beating Pittsburgh 5-3 at home to set a club record for consecutive wins. The streak began on Mar. 18 and eclipsed an eight-game winning streak from Jan. 6-23, 2014.

Apr. 11, 2015

The Blue Jackets earn a 5-4 SO win over the New York Islanders in the final regular season game played at Nassau Coliseum to extend their club record regulation unbeaten streak to 13 games (12-0-1 since Mar. 18). The previous mark was 12 games from Feb. 26-Mar. 22, 2013 (8-0-4).

The Blue Jackets reach an agreement with the Lake Erie Monsters to have the Cleveland-based team serve as the organization’s American Hockey League affiliate.

Oliver Bjorkstrand scores with 1.9 seconds remaining in OT in a 1-0 victory of Game 4 to give Cleveland’s Lake Erie Monsters, the Blue Jackets’ AHL affiliate, a sweep of the Hershey Bears in the Calder Cup final. The Monsters, which went 15-2 in the postseason, captured the first championship in franchise history and the first by a Columbus affiliate.

The Jackets kick off a franchise-record 11-game road point streak (10-0-1) with a 3-2 win at Washington on Nov. 20. They would outscore their opponents 40-21 during the streak.

The Blue Jackets post the second-longest win streak in NHL history by winning 16-straight games. It was one win short of tying the NHL record set by the 1992-93 Pittsburgh Penguins. Columbus outscored its opponents 62-27 in the 16 wins with three of the wins coming after regulation. The Jackets won all 14 of their December contests, the second-most victories in a perfect single month in league history (Pittsburgh: March 2013). The Blue Jackets also set a franchise record with eight-straight home wins during the stretch (Nov. 29-Jan. 3). Sergei Bobrovsky, meanwhile, won 14-straight games during the streak, tied for the second longest win streak in NHL history.

It’s the largest Blue Jackets representation in the All-Star Game in franchise history. Head coach John Tortorella was selected to coach the squad but missed the All-Star Game festivities.

Zach Werenski set the franchise rookie record with his 40th point of the season with an assist vs. Buffalo, surpassing Rick Nash’s record set in 2002-03. Three Blue Jackets win awards at the NHL Awards ceremony held in Las Vegas as head coach John Tortorella earns his second career Jack Adams Trophy (best coach), G Sergei Bobrovsky captures his second career Vezina Trophy (best goaltender) and captain Nick Foligno becomes the first player in league history to win the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and Mark Messier Leadership Award in the same campaign. He finishes his first Blue Jackets’ campaign with 27-55-82 in 81 games.

He would become the first rookie in CBJ history to play in all 82 games, finishing with 20-28-48.

The Jackets jumped out to a 2-0 series advantage in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals over the eventual Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals after earning two overtime victories on the road. Four of the six games in the series are decided after regulation as the Capitals earned a double overtime victory at Nationwide Arena in Game Three on the way to winning four-straight and advancing. It’s the second-straight year, Columbus has lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champion in the playoffs (Pittsburgh in 2017).

The club recognizes longtime play-by-play announcer Jeff Rimer with a ceremony prior to the start of a game against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Nationwide Arena. Rimer, who retired at the end of the 2023-24 season, spent 20 years as Blue Jackets TV voice on Fox Sports Ohio/Bally Sports Ohio. It also concluded a broadcasting career that spanned six decades.

Zach Werenski notches 2-2-4 and was +5 in the season finale on Apr. 16 vs. Carolina, becoming the sixth player – and first defenseman – in franchise history to record 300 career points (302). He would set single-season franchise records for assists (James Wisniewski, 44 in 2013-14) and points by a blueliner (tied with Seth Jones, 57 in 2017-18) with 11-46-57 in 70 contests.

Columbus hires veteran NHL executive Don Waddell as the club’s president of hockey operations, general manager and alternate governor. In addition, John Davidson remains with the club as a senior advisor and alternate governor.

Columbus selects six players at the 2024 NHL Draft, held at Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada. The team selects center Cayden Lindstrom with the fourth overall pick.

Blue Jackets All-Star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, are struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding bicycles in Oldmans Township, New Jersey.

Sept. 4, 2024

The organization holds a candlelight vigil in remembrance of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau on the Front Street Plaza outside the east entrance of Nationwide Arena. A memorial and funeral service for family and close friends is held on Sept. 9 in Pennsylvania.

Oct. 15, 2024

The Blue Jackets honor the lives of forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, during the club’s home opener against the Florida Panthers. The team honors the Gaudreaus throughout the 2024-25 season with a special “13 & 21” helmet sticker and “13” patch on players jerseys. In addition, Gaudreau’s No. 13 jersey is hung in his locker for all home and road contests during the campaign.

Nov. 21, 2024

Columbus, trailing 3-0 11:52 into the game, earns the seventh three-goal comeback win in franchise history with a 7-6 OT victory over Tampa Bay. The teams scored six goals in the first 6:18 of the second period and Zach Werenski set a new single-game franchise record for points by a defenseman with 2-3-5, including the OT winner.

The NHL announce members of the Blue Jackets’ First and Second Quarter-Century Teams as selected by a panel of local media, retired players and executives. The First Team includes forwards Rick Nash, Cam Atkinson and Artemi Panarin; defensemen Zach Werenski and Seth Jones; and goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky. The players selected to the Blue Jackets’ Second team are forwards Boone Jenner, Nick Foligno and Johnny Gaudreau; defensemen David Savard and Fedor Tyutin; and goaltender Steve Mason.

Jan. 25 – 31, 2025

The Blue Jackets register three-straight overtime victories vs. Los Angeles (Jan. 25), at Vegas (Jan. 30) and at Utah (Jan. 31) to finish the month of January with a record of 10-3-1 (21 points).

Feb. 12 – 20, 2025

Defenseman Zach Werenski stars at the 4 Nations Face-Off, a best-on-best tournament between Canada, Finland, Sweden, and the United States. He led the tournament in assists and points with six assists in four games for Team USA and became the first defenseman in NHL international tournament history to lead all players outright in points.

Zach Werenski records 1-2-3 in a 5-1 win over Chicago to stretch his home points streak to 22-games (17-27-41 since Nov. 1), which ties Phil Housley for the third-longest home points streak by a defenseman in NHL history. Werenski also set a new club mark for points in a single season by a defenseman with his 60th point during the contest.

The Blue Jackets play in the first outdoor game in franchise history – and 43rd in NHL regular season history – and defeat the Detroit Red Wings 5-3 in the 2025 Navy Federal Credit Union Stadium Series. The game at Ohio Stadium attracts 94,751 fans, which is the second-largest attendance for a game in NHL history.

The Blue Jackets earn a 7-3 victory over the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Zach Werenski surpasses Rick Nash (259) for the most assists in franchise history with his first of two assists. Adam Fantilli notches the second hat trick of his career to become the youngest player in Blue Jackets history (20-years) to record multiple hat tricks in the same season.

Columbus, which trailed 3-0 after the opening period, earns its second three-goal comeback victory of the season and eighth in franchise history with a 7-6 shootout win over Vancouver.

Kirill Marchenko collects his third career hat trick and the 53rd in club history with his first career four-point effort (3-1-4) in an 8-4 victory over Nashville. He reaches the 70-point plateau and along with Zach Werenski becomes the second set of teammates in CBJ history to reach the 70-point mark in a campaign (Foligno and Johansen in 2014-15).

The Blue Jackets wrap up the season with a franchise-first six-game regulation winning streak. The club outscores its opponents 28-6 during the streak and sets a new single-season franchise record for goals scored (267), surpassing the 258 recorded in 2021-22.

Adam Fantilli scores his 30th goal of the season in a 3-0 victory at Philadelphia, becoming the second-youngest player (20) in franchise history to reach the mark in a season (Rick Nash-19). He and Kirill Marchenko become the second pair of Blue Jackets teammates to record 30-plus goals in a campaign in franchise history (Saad & Jenner in 2015-16).

Columbus earns a 6-1 win over the NY Islanders in the season finale and sets a new single-season club record for goals scored at home (161). The team finishes 26-10-5 at home in 2024-25 (57 points) to tie the record for highest home point total in team history. Columbus finishes the season as the most improved team in the NHL with 13 more wins and 23 more points than in 2023-24.

Zach Werenski becomes the first Norris Trophy Award finalist in team history after setting single-season franchise records for a defenseman with 23-59-82, 298 shots on goal and 26:45 of ice time in 81 contests. He led the NHL in average ice time and led league blueliners in even strength goals (17), even strength points (tied, 54) and shots on goal, while also ranking second in goals, points, power play goals (tied, 5) and game-winning goals (5) and fourth in assists.

Sean Monahan is the third player in franchise history to be named a finalist for, and the first to win the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. Signed as a free agent on July 1, 2024, he registered 19-38-57 in 54 contests and finished with a career high in points-per-game (1.06) in his first campaign with the Blue Jackets.

June 27 – 28, 2025

The Blue Jackets select six players in the 2025 NHL Draft, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. The team selects two players in the first round, selecting Tri-City D Jackson Smith (14th) and CSKA Jr. G Pyotr Andreyanov (20th) with Meredith Gaudreau announcing the picks on stage.
